Background:

As Testing Coordinator (an appointive position), Paul Jensen has overseen the testing program for MNM for many years.  Give him credit here, he's done an outstanding job of it and our membership numbers reflect that.  But it hasn't all been perfect.  In this very critical area- the one in which people have their first contacts with Mensa as an organization- Paul has dropped the ball more than once:

Paul:

We've stated receiving calls from the candidates you tested on June 10th.  We have not received any tests from you from this session.  Have they been sent to us and how?

Thanks!

Cyndi and DeDe:

We have not heard from Paul regarding this email.  Two of the candidates are calling multiple times a day and are not very happy which I can understand.

Can either of you get in touch with Paul and find out about these missing tests and let me know?

Thanks!

Karen

DeDe:

As you are aware the June testing sessions that were done by Paul Jensen on June 10 and June 12 were not mailed to our office in a timely manner. After numerous attempts to contact Paul, I finally received notification from him that the tests were misplaced and were received by our office on July 27. We have scored the tests and sent letters to all candidates with a letter of apology for the delay.

Because of this delay we have credited each qualified candidate the $30 test session fee towards dues. This will not effect your local groups funding of $12.50 per member, however if a situation like this arises again we will have no choice but to withhold funding if we have to credit the test session fee.

Thanks for your help and for Cyndi Kuyper's help in locating the lost tests.

Paying and Supporting Proctors

Proctors are paid a small stipend for their efforts in organizing and administering American Mensa's standard test for admission.  These people work hard for what little they get.... and apparently, Paul hasn't been giving them that, either:

Sarah Gillert

In a message dated 6/14/2005 9:06:49 PM Central Daylight Time, dedet@baldwin-telecom.net writes:

Read about Sarah.  She left Mensa for financial reasons, but was also tired of working for Paul.  He would say he did things and would not do them.

Anyway,

DeDe

To Cyndi K -

He hadn't paid Sarah for a test done months ago and she has bugged him for the money several times.  He's seen her many times, but hasn't given her the money.

So I walk in, then Sarah, and the first words out of his mouth, is that he is going to pay her - surprised me!

David Hallman

I am leaving as Red River Coordinator in January after five years and a large part of it has to do with Paul. I am also a test proctor and I have had many instances of not getting re-embursed and feeling belittled in the years I have volunteered to test. One of the reasons Paul was national proctor of the year was because of testing done in my area. I didn't ever get my area mentioned when the award was given. I am not one who desires attention or lauditory remarks. I do however get satisfaction from a Thank You or a pat on the back. I dont get any of those as a testor [sic] except I get treated real nice right before national test day so I can pad the test statistics. I will go now because I have better things to do than talk about how lousy I was treated.

Proctor Training Improperly Done

The following two letters from American Mensa, Ltd. to two proctor candidates indicate that Paul submitted their applications as proctors without completing the necessary training.

Dear Mr. Dubin:

Thank you for recently submitting your application to become a proctor. Your application is pending, awaiting your final steps of observing one test session and then conducting one test session under the supervision of a certified Mensa Proctor. I have enclosed a form that you should have signed by the proctor who observes your test sessions. Once the form is complete and returned, your application can be processed and you will be certified as a proctor.

Dr. Frank Lawlis, American Mensa's supervisory psychologist, may be contacted through the national office, do not hesitate to contact him if you have more questions about Mensa testing procedures. Since your appointment will come under the license of our psychologist, it is important that you make us aware of any concerns, problems or questions you have as soon as possible.

Thank you for volunteering to perform this very valuable service for Mensa. The best of luck to you and your local group.

Dear Angela,

Thank you for recently submitting your application to become a proctor.  Your application indicates that you do not have the all of the required training to become a proctor.  Before we can approve your application you need to complete the training steps indicated below. These requirements, while they may seem demanding, are required by the testing companies and state licensing entities.

Steps for Approval for proctors without supervised testing experience or training:
1) Be approved for training by the National Office. This requires that you submit your completed proctor application, including
    the appropriate endorsements
2) Read the Proctor Handbook thoroughly. (This is enclosed.)
3) Observe two full Mensa supervised testing sessions. These testing sessions must be conducted by currently certified Mensa proctors, and the proctors must provide written documentation that you met this requirement (see enclosed Certification of Proctor Training form).
4) Be observed giving two full Mensa supervised testing sessions by a currently certified Mensa proctor(s). The proctor(s) who observe you must provide written documentation that you administered the tests appropriately and recommend your certification as a proctor (see Certification of Proctor Training form).
5) Submit documentation of your training (i.e., the Certification of Proctor Training form).to the National Office) for review.
You will be notified by a letter from the National Office once you have been approved as a proctor.

As of this point your application indicated you have completed several of these steps. I have enclosed a form that you should have signed by the proctor(s) who observed your training and the Proctor Handbook. Once the form is complete and returned, your application can be processed and you will be certified as a proctor.

Dr. Lawlis, American Mensa's Supervisory Psychologist, may be contacted through the national office, do not hesitate to contact him if you have more questions about Mensa testing procedures. Since your appointment will come under the license of our supervisory psychologist, it is important that you make us aware of any concerns, problems or questions you have as soon as possible.

Thank you for volunteering to perform this very valuable service for Mensa. The best of luck to you and your local group.
